Black and white diptych of two small fine line script tattoos, one reading forever and one reading always, each with a small heart, on the side of the body.

Forever and always script tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The left photo shows the word forever in thin, joined script with a small outlined heart at the end, sitting on the side of the body beside a light garment. The right photo shows the word always in similar fine script with a small heart, placed on a different part of the body under a rolled sleeve. Both photographs are black and white, so the ink appears as clean dark grey lines with soft shading on the skin.

The ferry from Ceres Ring Four ran on a timetable nobody trusted, so the dockmaster Ottilie Vance kept a paper ledger of every promise made on the platform. Most entries were short. A cargo lease ran five years, a berth rental ran one, and a wedding ran for as long as the couple could pay the renewal fee at the kiosk by the airlock.

Tobiah Qureshi, the seed-vault technician who had rented the room above her office since spring, asked her one evening why the back pages held two words in different hands. The first was written in pencil, pressed hard, and said always. The second was in blue ink beside it, slanting the other way, and said forever. Ottilie told him her mother had written always on the day the ring was sealed, and her grandmother had answered with forever a decade later, after the old lease lapsed and the family had nothing left to sign. Neither of them had ever met the other's idea of time.

He read the pages while the ring's spin shifted under them and the cups on her desk slid an inch toward the wall. When the bell rang eleven minutes late, he set his pension card on the counter and asked her to put his name beside the words. She refused the card. She took the pencil instead, wrote a single small heart after always, and then, without a word, drew one after forever as well, so the two lines finally matched.
