Small stag with a bird on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a stag stands side on, with a tiny songbird perched on the top of its antlers. The linework is fine and the ink is a single dark tone, with light shading along the body and legs. The tattoo sits alone in the centre of the frame against warm, softly blurred skin, with a dark fabric strap running along the left edge.

The vicar has run out of hymn sheets, and the marquee smells of wet grass and cheap sherry. You are crouched behind the old oak at the edge of Hollins Field with the ring box in your waistcoat pocket, because your sister made you promise it would reach the top table before the speeches, and nobody else in the family would climb the stile in good shoes.

A stag steps out of the bracken, tall and unbothered, a thin fog of breath drifting from its muzzle. A small brown songbird sits on the points of its left antler as if it were a fence post. Mr Aske, the farmer, said the stag had been coming down to the lower field since spring, and that it never ran from anyone who kept still. So you keep still. The bird sings three notes, then a fourth, and the stag lowers its head to the grass as though it has been asked a question and agrees with the answer.
When you climb back over the stile, the ring box is still in your pocket, and you have no idea how long you were gone. Your sister is waiting at the gate with her veil over one arm, half furious and half laughing. "Where did you get to?" she asks. You tell her a stag wanted to see the bride. She says you have been at the cider, but she takes your arm anyway and walks you up the path toward the music.
At the top of the lane you hand over the box. She opens it, looks at the ring, and then glances past you at the hedge, where something moves in the hawthorn and a single bright note rings out before the fiddles drown it. She does not ask what you saw. She just smiles and slides the ring on.
