Grey shaded fawn on the nape
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A young spotted fawn stands side on, facing right, with its head raised and one ear turned back. The body uses soft grey shading with pale dots along the back, and the legs and face are lightly toned against the skin. The fawn sits centred on the nape with plenty of clean skin around it and brown hair framing the top of the frame.

The winter the river froze to the bottom, Tomas Greave's mother sent him up the hill road with a sack of salt and a message for the widow at Hollin Cross. The inn there had only one lamp lit, and the widow, Agnes Lowe, did not look up from her bread when he came in stamping snow. She said the deer had been at the turnip clamp again and pointed with her elbow to the back door.

He found the fawn in the lean-to behind the woodpile. It was no bigger than a sheep dog pup, spotted like a sieve of moonlight, and it lifted its head as he came in and turned one ear back toward him the way a person listens to a voice in another room. Agnes had been feeding it warm milk from a stone bottle. It would not take the bottle from anyone else. Tomas knelt in the straw and held out his hand, and it stepped over the rope of the gate on its thin legs and pushed its nose into his palm.
They kept it through the thaw. In March, when the road opened and the fields went green at the edges, Tomas came up the hill with the salt and found the lean-to empty and the gate tied back with a clean knot. Agnes was in the yard, shaking out a cloth. She said nothing about the fawn. She only handed him a loaf still warm from the stone and told him his mother would want to know the road was passable.
He walked home with the bread under his coat. At the bend below the cross, where the hedge breaks, a young doe stood watching him with a spotted back and her head raised, and she was gone before he could decide whether to call out.
