Small star on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black five-pointed star sits on the back of a hand, close to the wrist and thumb. The star is filled in with black ink and has crisp edges, with no colour or shading. The hand rests over a bare thigh and a white crochet lace fabric in the lower part of the frame, against a soft, warm-toned background.

Dear Maud, the veil came back from the cleaners on Thursday with a tear at the hem, and I spent the whole of Friday at the kitchen table with my old crochet hook, picking out the stitches one by one. You always said I was too fussy about lace. Your mother was married in this same veil, and her mother before her, and I will not have the edge go to rags on your big day.

The border is the part I love most, those little rosettes that look as if they were pressed into the cotton by a thumb. Between each one I worked a single solid star, five points, no bigger than a fingernail, and I stitched them in black thread only because your grandfather kept asking why. Wedding lace is supposed to be white. I told him the stars were for the nights he spent out on the boats, watching the harbour lights at Whitby and counting the way home. He laughed, then went quiet, the way he did.
Now the veil is mended and folded in tissue paper at the bottom of the blue trunk. Don't open it until the morning. The stars will be hard to see once you are standing in the church light, but that is the point. Only you will know they are there, the way you know where a dropped stitch was even after the row has been worked over it.
Come up on the Tuesday train. I'll have the kettle on and the hook ready, and we can decide what to do about the ribbon. Your loving nan, Edith.
