Small outline airplane on the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small airplane is drawn as a single black outline on the side of the torso, angled diagonally. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photo is cropped to the tattoo and part of the back, with a white top and blonde hair framing the image.

The rings were in a sandwich bag tucked inside my left sock when the captain announced that the northern runway at Gatwick was closed and we would be circling for a while. He said you could tell a good pilot by whether the drawing could be done without stopping.

Somewhere over Reading I started drawing one on the tray table with the biro from my passport wallet. Mel, who was supposed to be asleep, watched me over the top of her eye mask. 'You're not going to stop until it's right,' she said. I told her I had it. The thing on the napkin looked more like a paper dart than anything that could carry a suitcase, and she laughed so hard the man in the next seat asked if I was an engineer in disguise.
We landed at twenty to eleven. The taxi got us to the church at ten past two, the rings still in their bag, the groom pacing the vestry in a suit that had been ironed by three different people. When I handed him the sandwich bag, he didn't look at the rings. He unfolded the napkin, studied the single black line for a long moment, and asked where I'd learned to draw like that. I said Dad, and he nodded as though that explained everything, and folded it into his breast pocket, right over his heart, where it stayed all afternoon.
