Bare tree tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a bare tree with a slender trunk and branching limbs sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm. The linework is thin and even, and the design is in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The photo is taken outdoors in soft light, with a beaded bracelet on the left and a floral fabric sleeve and knitted grey sweater in the background.

The lot was sold in February, and the only thing the buyers didn't want was the elm by the north gate. Pa said it had stood there since the big top first pitched on Hollins Field, and that a circus without a tree to hang the lanterns from was just a tent full of cold wind. So the lanterns hung from the bare branches all through that last winter, and we played to nine people on a Tuesday.

Mirela, who walked the wire, taught me to read the tree the way she read a rope, by the tension in it. Before the ticket man came each morning, I sat under its limbs with a tin of stewed tea and counted the buds that didn't come. Nothing came. The ground had gone too hard for the roots, the diesel had got into the well, and the council had sent a letter about the fence.
On the last night the ringmaster sent the elephant home in the back of a lorry and called the rest of us into the ring for a bow. I went out to the tree instead. Someone had hung one lantern too high, so I climbed the trunk, which was slender as a broom handle, and worked the hook free. The bark was cold as old coins under my palms.
When I came down the wind had turned, and the top branches were rattling against the canvas like applause that didn't know when to stop. I set the lantern on the lowest limb, where it would throw its light across the empty ring, and walked out past the north gate with my hands in my pockets, leaving it burning for whoever came next.
