The frost had held the byre door shut for three days, and Old Maud Penrose was still chipping ice from the trough when the swallow dropped out of the rafters and lay in the straw like a thrown glove.

Her son Tobias wanted it buried. "It's dead, Mam, look at its feet." But she knelt, breathed on the small black body, and felt a heartbeat no bigger than a seed. She carried it in her apron to the kitchen range and set it on a folded cloth beside the bread crock, where the warmth came up through the flagstones.

Everyone on the farm knew the old saying. A swallow that stays past Michaelmas has made a bargain with the frost, and the frost always comes to collect. Maud had never believed it. She believed in lamp oil, thick wool and a sound hen-house wall. She had no patience for bargains.

Still, through the long dark weeks she fed it crumbs soaked in milk and watched it grow strong enough to grip her finger. One morning in February it lifted its head, shook out its wings and hopped to the windowsill. It looked at the white fields for a long time, then turned and flew straight out into the cold, low over the hedges towards the sea.

That night the frost cracked the trough clean through. In the morning Maud found a single feather on the sill, dark as ink, and she left it there.
