Lotus flower on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single lotus flower is drawn in thin pink linework, with a separate purple stem curving down from its base. The image is a close, straight-on view of pale skin, with the design sitting on the inner wrist and forearm against a dark background. The design is outline only, with no shading, and the two ink colours are the main contrast.

Dear Nell,

The rain hasn't let up since Tuesday and the yard at Calder Market is a lake again, so I've moved the tubs under the awning and kept the lotus pots on the crate by the till. You'll laugh, but the one with the cracked lip is still going strong. Mr Okafor from the bakery stopped by this morning and asked why I was nursing a plant that looked half drowned when the rest of the stall was selling cut stems at three for a pound. I told him it wasn't drowning. It was waiting for the silt to settle.
That's the thing nobody believes about lotus, that it comes up out of the muck with its petals still clean. Dad used to say you could bury a bloom in river mud and it would open pale in the morning. I think he was half making it up, but I kept the saying. Yesterday a girl with a damp coat bought the last tuber and asked if I'd draw the stem for her on the back of the receipt, so she'd remember which way it bent. She wanted the purple one, the colour of plums going off. I didn't understand until she showed me the sketch in her notebook, the flower in pencil and the stem curving down under it like a question mark that had changed its mind.
I've put your share in the tin under the scales. Come Saturday if the sky holds, and bring the good secateurs, the cheap ones are rusting on me. The ribbon's still on the crate if you want to tie up the window display.
Love, Ruth
