Daisy cluster on the back of the neck
Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical cluster of daisy-like flowers, with open petals and dark centres, sits on the nape and upper back of a person with hair pulled up. The flowers are built from fine stippled dots and soft fading shading, with loose dotted spray around the edges. The image is in black and grey against pale skin and a white vest top, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Seven flowers, then nine, all white-rayed and dark-centred, pushing out of a crack no wider than my thumb. Nobody had planted them. The Ashdown estate had been selling off the stones for a decade, and the cows had long since stopped coming up the hill.

I was twelve that summer and had decided I would be the one to tell the surveyor from Lincoln that the castle was not finished. He came with his clipboard and brown shoes and wrote "structurally unsound" without looking up. Then he saw me kneeling by the wall with my palm flat on the warm stone, and he asked what I was doing. I said I was keeping the daisies company. He laughed, not unkindly, and said the ones on the north wall would be gone by autumn.
They weren't. The petals bleached and curled, their centres darkened in the wet, and the next spring a spray of seedlings came up through the loose rubble below, scattered as if someone had flicked ink from a brush. I stopped arguing with the surveyor. I kept the lime in the shed and used it on the rosebay instead, and by the time the council fenced off the keep, a line of white flowers ran up the stone like a half-finished sentence.
