Small triangle tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A small solid triangle is tattooed on the upper arm, split into three filled sections in mint green, dusty brown and black. The shapes have crisp, clean edges with no shading or fine linework. The skin is shown in soft natural light against a blurred background, with a navy and white striped top at the edge of the frame.

Ansel Hagg cut his sail-triangles from whatever the sea gave back to him. The Porthcarrow men called it foolishness, but his boats never failed to make the bar, and nobody had lost a hull out of his yard in twenty years. The spring after his wife's boat went down off the Brannock, he came along the quay with a bundle of stiff canvas under one arm and asked young Mary Penhale for the loan of her needle.

She sewed what he asked. The mint came from a jib the storm had torn off the Gannet, the brown from a sail that had floated home with no crew aboard, and the black from the mainsail nobody would claim. Ansel laid the three pieces side by side on the wall and said a boat needed a mark the fog could not take from her. Mary asked what the triangle was for. He pointed the sharp end toward the bar and the broad end toward the cottages. "That's the way home," he said. "Green for the shallows, brown for the land, black for what lies under."
The fleet went out that May into the thickest fog anyone remembered. The bell on the harbour wall rang all day, and the boats came back by its sound, one by one, all except the Gannet's sister, which Ansel had fitted with the triangle and sent out alone to search. She came in at dusk, her sail small and torn, the mint showing bright through the grey.
Ansel died the winter after. Mary kept the offcuts in a biscuit tin, and every spring she sews a triangle no bigger than a thumbnail onto the first boat out. The old men say the fog lifts for it sooner than for any other mark on the coast, and none of them can say why.
