Two thin bands around a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a forearm and hand, with the wearer's green knit sleeve pushed up above the elbow. Two thin, crisp black lines run fully around the forearm as a simple band, with no shading. The palette is muted, with warm skin tones, the dark green sweater and a brown background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Nile had drawn back into its channels overnight and left the fields grey with silt, so Hesi was already on his knees with the measuring cord before the sun cleared the palms. "Hold the knot, boy, and do not let it sag," he said. I held it. Two lengths of black-dyed flax ran out across the mud from the boundary stone, each knotted at the cubit, and the neighbours stood at either end watching us the way cats watch a dish.

The quarrel was between Tanetru, a widow with four goats and a temper, and Paser, whose father had moved the stone a finger's width in the bad years. Hesi walked the line twice, muttering numbers, then sat back on his heels and studied the ground as if it might confess. "The flood never lies about where a field begins," he said. "It only tells us where the people stopped agreeing."

He took a reed pen from behind his ear and drew two lines in red ochre across the face of the stone, one above the other, a hand's width apart. "Two lines," he said. "One for what you hold, one for what you concede. A boundary is only a thing two people agree to see." Paser grumbled, then nodded. Tanetru spat, then laughed, and pressed a warm loaf into Hesi's hands for the trouble.

That evening I wound the spare cord twice around my arm and knotted it tight, so I would remember which side of the work was mine and which side was only borrowed.
