The ferry from Oban leaves you on the slipway at Eilean Doran with the wind already pushing at your coat, and the first thing you notice is the box. Someone has set a police box on the stone above the high-water mark, black as wet slate, its four small windows dark. Nobody on the island has needed a telephone box since the exchange closed, and the nearest constable is on the mainland, so you walk round it twice before you dare touch the door.

Inside it smells of rain and paraffin, and it is far larger than it has any right to be. A corridor runs back into the dark past a row of brass coat hooks, and on each hook hangs a coat you recognise. Your father's oilskin, cracked at the elbows. Morag's blue cardigan, the one she was buried in. A child's yellow mac you cannot place at all. The lamp by the door gutters, and a voice that is almost your own says, Keep your hands in your pockets. The floor is still deciding what it is.

You count the hooks, then the coats, and stop at the sixth. It is empty, but the wood beneath it is warm, as if someone has only just lifted their jacket from it. Behind you the door swings shut on its own. When you turn, the island is still there through the small panes, grey and ordinary, the ferry's wake white on the water, and the box has gone quiet, the way a house does when it is waiting for you to decide whether to stay.

You reach up and take the hook down. It is heavier than you expected, and it fits your shoulders as if it had been measured for them.
