Snail and crystal cluster on the ribs
Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a snail with its antennae raised, crawling beside a cluster of pointed quartz crystals. The snail body is built from fine stippled dots, while the crystal facets use hatched and shaded lines to suggest depth. The tattoo sits low on the side of the torso, with a hand and a dark fabric edge visible at the top of the frame.

The lock-keeper's daughter had been counting the crystals in the cave above Hobbs Weir since she was seven, and she still had not reached the same number twice. Her father said it did not matter. The stones were not going anywhere, and neither was the snail that kept them company, which had been climbing the wet ledge for as long as anyone in Thornbury could remember.

She brought the snail down to the barge in a jar of river water, because she wanted to show Mr Ashdown, who bought salt and glass from the upstream boats and paid in tobacco. He turned the jar slowly in his big hands and held it up to the lamp. The snail lifted its two dark feelers, one after the other, as if testing the weather.
"Quartz," he said. "Clear as a bell, that cluster. Cut it right and it would ring." He handed the jar back. "But you'll not cut it. Things that grow slow don't like to be hurried, and neither does a snail."
She went back to the cave that night with a hammer in her coat. She sat for a long while beside the crystals, watching the snail's slow silver trail cross the rock, and in the end she left the hammer where it lay. When she came down to the water at dawn, the barge was already gone, and the crystals kept their own time.
