Fine line arrows and heart on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two fine line arrows run diagonally down the side of the ribs, one with a triangular head and the other with a diamond head and feathered fletching, ending in a small heart. The linework is thin and even, with only minimal shading, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink. The black and white photograph is framed close, with a hand with dark nail polish holding the skin on the left and a lace strap at the right edge.

Sit closer, the wind up here takes half of every word, so you'll have to lean in like a man listening at a keyhole. My grandmother's grandmother knew the pass at Harrow Cleft when there was still a toll hut at the top, and she swore two archers once fought a duel across the gap without ever aiming at each other.

Their names were Tamsin Oake and Revel Bright, and both had been promised to the same shepherd's village below. Revel shot first, a long arrow with a triangular head cut from flint so sharp it could split slate. He meant it for the far crag where the old marker stone stood, and it struck true, a chime that rang down the valley. Tamsin waited a full hour before she answered. Her arrow had a diamond head and grey goose feathers bound with waxed thread, and it flew slow and low, as if it did not want to go at all.

It came down in the snow beside the toll hut, where a boy was fetching water. Tied to the shaft was a scrap of paper folded small. The words on it were written in a hand that shook: the stone is not the only thing worth finding. He kept that arrow above his hearth for forty years, and the village said he never married, though he always swore he had been asked twice.

When the boy was old and the hut had fallen in, somebody found a second paper under the floorboards. It said only that Revel had shot his arrow first on purpose, so that Tamsin would know where to aim. Now mind the path on the way down. The snow is soft at the bend, and the cleft has taken better walkers than you.
