Snail with crystals and sprigs drawing
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A pencil drawing of a snail crawling to the right, with a spiral shell and a cluster of quartz-like crystals and sprigs of foliage growing across its back. The outlines are thin and precise, and the shell and body are softly shaded in lavender and pale purple. The design sits centred on a sheet of white paper, with crystals, a candle and coloured pencils placed around the edges.

Nobody on the station grew snails anymore. The hydroponics bays had been sealed for a decade, and the air outside the dome was a thin green soup that burned the lungs. Still, there it was, sliding through a crack in the seal, leaving a silver trail across the cold pane.

Her grandmother had kept a notebook of things that should not be possible. Mara pulled it from under the bunk and turned to the page marked with a pressed sprig of rosemary. There was a sketch in the margin: a snail, a spiral shell, quartz growing from its back. Under it, in faded pencil, the words Ask it where the rain went.
She fetched a glove, a jar and a spoon of nutrient paste. The snail took the paste without hurry, its horns folding and unfolding like a question being reconsidered. When she lifted the jar to the lamp, the crystals caught the light and threw lavender across the walls of the corridor, and for a moment the whole dead bay seemed to remember being green.
He was a slow messenger, her grandmother had written, but a patient one. Mara set the jar on the sill, opened the vent a finger's width, and sat down to wait for the rain to come back the way it had gone.
