Hummingbird sketch in ink
Black and grey · Flash
A loose sketch of a hummingbird in flight, with its long beak extended to the right and wings and tail feathers drawn as flowing, feathered strokes. The linework is dark, varied and sketchy, with some fine spatter dots around the wings, and the bird is drawn in black ink on cream paper. A black fineliner pen lies diagonally across the upper right of the frame.

The drones had stopped answering in the third week of the dry season, so Mira climbed the north terraces of Greyhythe Deep with a paintbrush and a tin of pollen, working along rows of squash flowers until her wrists ached. Nobody had told her the birds were gone. She had simply stopped seeing them, the way you stop noticing a clock.

Her grandmother's sketchbook lived in the lab's cold cupboard, wrapped in oilcloth. Inside, between pages of seed-count tables, was a single drawing made with a black fineliner: a hummingbird mid-hover, beak thrust out like a stitch pulled taut, its tail breaking apart into strokes that looked more like weather than feather. Beside it her grandmother had written in neat capitals, FEED THE LINE, NOT THE BIRD.
Mira had taken it for a joke, or a prayer. On the twelfth morning she found a flicker at the edge of row forty, a smudge of green that lifted, hung, and was gone. She sat down in the dirt and laughed until the irrigation sensors chirped at her for moving too much. Then she went back to the cupboard, copied the drawing onto a seed tag with the beak pointing toward the last working valve, and pinned it to the gate.
By dusk there were three of them at the squash, shaking the pollen loose from their wings. Mira did not clean the brush that night. She left it on the step with the tin open, ready for whoever came next.
