A small moth with shaded wings and feathered antennae sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The linework and shading are soft and detailed, with grey tones giving the wings depth and a pale highlight across the forewing. The image is a close crop of the chest and neck, with dark hair at the sides and a white lace garment at the lower left.

The king of Ashgrove had ordered every lamp in the valley put out, for he said a light at night only showed thieves where to find the silver. So the chandler's youngest daughter, Idris, kept one candle hidden in the bell tower of Saint Brannoc's, and she lit it after the sentries had passed beneath.

The moths came up the stairwell from the mill-race each night. They were grey as wet slate, with feathered heads like old men's eyebrows and a pale band across the forewing that caught the candle like a thread of frost. Idris never asked them where they came from. She only shut the shutters and counted them in.

One night a sentry named Corran climbed the tower to see what the glow was. He stood at the top of the stair with his spear hanging from his hand and watched the moths circle the flame in their slow, careful way. He asked her why she risked her neck for insects. She said the king had only forbidden light, not dark, and that a moth knows the difference better than a man.

Corran went back down and reported nothing. In the morning the king's men searched the tower and found the candle burned to a stub, the shutters open, and no one at all. Only one moth remained on the sill, its pale band bright in the sunrise. Corran lifted it onto his palm and carried it to the window, and he let it go out over the river toward the sea.
