Snarling wolf and hummingbird on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A snarling wolf head dominates the upper part of the design, with a hummingbird perched on a branch below it and leaves set among dark swirling shapes. The wolf's fur and the bird's feathers are rendered with fine shading and soft grey gradients, while the spirals and leaves use bold solid black. Two side-by-side photographs show the same piece from slightly different angles against a plain background.

Sit closer, the fire's gone low and I won't shout this. My grandmother told it to me under the Bramley tree the summer the wolf came down off Cold Fell, and she swore every word was true, which is what storytellers say once they've polished a lie for forty years.

The shepherds called the wolf Grey Tom, though nobody had got close enough to learn whether it had a name at all. It came in August, when the becks dried to threads and the orchards hung heavy with fruit nobody had time to pick. It took two ewes from the Harrisons, then sat on the wall above the apple rows and snarled at the cider house, lip lifted, teeth like a row of white nails, while the whole valley kept its doors barred.

Then came the hummingbird. Nobody believes this part. A bird no bigger than a thumb, green as a bottle end, rose from the grass where it had been feeding on the last sweet flowers, and it hung in the air right under that muzzle and would not move. The wolf lunged and the bird was gone, then back again, a tick of light by its nose. It went on like that from noon until the bells, quick and stubborn as a needle, and each time the wolf glanced away, the bird snipped a leaf from the branch and wove it into a cup beneath the wall.

By dusk the wolf lay flat in the grass with its chin on its paws and its eyes half shut. The hummingbird settled on the branch above its nose, and the two of them stayed there, neither willing to be the first to leave. In the morning the wolf had gone back over the fell. The bird was still on its branch, and the leaf cup was full, and that year the apples were the sweetest anyone in the valley had ever tasted. Now mind the step on your way out.
