Wolf head with teal crystals on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head looks down and to the left, with its paws resting on angular teal and blue crystals that frame the design. Soft grey shading and fine dark outlines define the fur and crystal facets, with small bubble shapes rising above the head. The three panels show the same tattoo from slightly different angles against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf had been under the lake since the first hard frost, and Hollin Dale agreed that was the sensible place for her. Nobody agreed on why she had gone down there. Mrs Ashdown said she had chased a hare onto the thin ice. Her son Tobias swore she had gone after the church bell that sank the winter the tower fell, and meant to bring it up.

I was sent out with a lantern and a coil of rope, being the lamplighter's girl. The lake had grown crystals in the night. They pushed up through the white skin of the ice like the teeth of a comb, teal and pale blue, each with a hard edge that caught the lamp and threw it back in splinters. Under them the water was black, and now and then a bubble rose slow and round and broke against the underside of the ice with a sound like someone sighing in another room.

I knelt where the ice was thickest and held the lantern down. The wolf was there, flat against the underside with her forepaws spread wide, long claws resting on the crystals as if holding a door shut against a gale. She was not looking up at me. She was looking down and to the left, at something on the lake floor I could not see, and her ears lay back with care, the way you would hold your breath beside a sleeping child.

I understood then that she had not fallen through. She had gone down to hold the ice up over the place where the old bell lay, so the cracks would not run out to the skaters' path. I set the lantern on the ice, and the light went through the crystals and lit her face. She lifted her head. She did not come up. She let one bubble go, the whole lake answered with a long, low note, and when I walked home across the ice in the grey morning, it held.
