Snarling wolf head with banner

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A black outline drawing of a snarling wolf's head with bared teeth, open jaws and a ruffled mane. Two banners cross the design, one above and one below the head, reading THIS WORLD OWES YOU NOTHING. The linework is bold and even, with fine hatching in the fur and no shading or colour, set on a plain cream background.

You learn the lock keepers' rule before you learn your letters: nothing comes up a cut for free, and the water never waits on anyone. Your father's boat, the Mercy Jane, is forty feet of rust-brown steel that smells of diesel and wet rope, and when his lungs fail him in February, the tiller falls to you at sixteen.

The bank at Carrow Lock wants a toll for the deep draught, the coalman wants his debt, and the widow at the top of the Ashby Cut wants her gate mended before she'll sign for anything. You haul scrap and coal for six weeks, sleeping in the cabin with the stove ticking. A grey lurcher follows you along the towpath, thin as a rake, and you feed it the crust of every loaf because nobody else will.

On the night the coalman comes aboard with two men and a bottle, you are already standing at the bow with the boathook. He says the world owes him, that the money is owed to him by right, and you tell him, flatly, that the world owes you nothing either, so pay your fare or step back onto the bank. The dog goes for the nearest boot. The men are sober enough to see the teeth and sensible enough to go.

Morning brings mist off the water and the lock gates groaning open. You bring the Mercy Jane down through the grey with the lurcher braced on the roof like a figurehead, and you do not look back at the towpath. By the time you reach the wide water at Limehouse, the dog has curled on the hatch as if it had always belonged there, and you have stopped asking the canal for anything it has not already taken.
