Snarling wolf head with rose

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A snarling wolf's head in profile, with its mouth open to show fangs and a drooping tongue, is drawn in bold black outline. A shaded rose with several leaves sits to the lower left of the wolf, and a few drips fall below its jaw. The wolf's fur is rendered with heavy black strokes and grey shading on a plain light grey background.

You arrive at the Brine Street boarding house in February, when the salt wind has already stripped the paint from the letters over the door. Mrs Ottoline Vane hands you a key on a brass fob shaped like a rose and recites the rules: the boiler goes off at ten, the top landing is nobody's business, and the wolf in the hall is not to be fed. You ask which wolf. She nods at the carved newel post at the foot of the stairs, a snarling head with its jaws wide, a rose cut in against its shoulder, the grain so dark it looks wet.

The first week you hear it at night, a scrape on the banister like someone dragging a sodden coat up the stairs. Each morning there is one more black petal on the hall mat than the day before. Mrs Vane says the last night porter left in a hurry and took nothing but his boots. When you ask where he went, she says he walked out to the pier to look at the sea, and the sea looked back, and then she returns to her ledger without another word.

On the seventh night you do not sleep. You take the lamp down and find the newel post has shifted a hand's width from its place, the rose now turned toward the front door. Dark drops lie on the bottom step, leading out into the cold. You follow them down to the harbour wall, where a grey wolf stands at the end of the breakwater with its mouth open to the spray, and a single black rose turns slowly in the shallows at its feet.

When you return, the lamp is still burning in the hall. Above the door the letters have been repainted, and they spell your name, the paint still wet and glistening in the lamplight.
