Snarling tribal bear with claws

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A snarling bear in profile, with bared teeth and clawed front paw, rendered as a solid black tribal-style design. The shapes are bold and flame-like, with sharp barbed edges and negative space forming the fur, and the figure is set against a flat grey background. The composition is cropped close, with a second dark shape visible at the top edge.

The bear came off the Grey Lass the night my brother quit drinking, though nobody believed the connection but me. I found the boat's bow stripped to bare wood at first light, and a trail of black shavings on the slipway, each one jagged at the edges like broken slate. Old Hal Trewin, who had painted that bear on her in tar and lamp black thirty years back, just stood with his hands in his coat and said it had always wanted out to the weather.

It had gone along the breakwater, the harbour master told us later, dragging one paw over the stones with a sound like a knife on a whetstone. It passed the chandlery, the fish market and the lamp at the end of the pier. Where it stopped was the lifeboat shed, whose door had been left open. My brother Owen was asleep on the bench inside with a bottle rolling by his boot, and when he woke there was a shape crouched over him, teeth bared, black as a hole in the sky. He told me he didn't move. He told me it held there until his breathing matched its own.

The gale came in at noon. The Penn boys were out past the Mouse, and the coxswain's engine had cut. Owen was on the slip before anyone else had their oilskins on. He took the boat out alone, shoulder to the oar, and came back at dusk towing two men and a dinghy full of cod.

Next morning the bear was back on the bow, sharp and entire, as if it had never gone. Hal sat on an upturned crate with a brush in his hand and no paint on it. Owen stood beside him, hair still stiff with salt, and neither of them said a word about what they were looking at.
