Snowboard and pine tree silhouette
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette on a white background, showing a snowboard standing upright on the left with two bindings, and a conifer tree on the right whose roots spread across the base. The shapes are flat and filled with no interior linework, shading or grey tones. The composition is centred and vertical, with the board and tree sharing a single central axis.

The fir came down in the February gale that took the lift cables above Glen Tarff and scattered the café sign across three fields. My father would not let the council saw it up for firewood. He walked out in his good boots with a tape and a flask, measured the trunk from root to crown, and told me the wood had been growing for ninety years, which was more patience than either of us had.

By April he had cut a board from the straightest section, planed it thin in the shed, and steamed the tip until it curled like a sickle. The grain ran true through the core, the rings tight as a fingerprint. He bolted two bindings from a box of old parts he had been hoarding since the nineties and stood the finished board against the stump by the shed door. In the low sun the board and the tree it came from lined up on one axis, and he said nothing about it for a long time.
Kit rode it the first winter, down the old shelf where the fir had stood. It was too stiff for him and he came off twice, laughing into the snow each time. My father watched from the top rope with his hands in his pockets. Come spring we dug the root ball out to clear the yard, and he would not let me throw it on the bonfire. We dragged it down to the bank of the burn and set it where the water could reach it, roots spread across the ground like fingers on a table. By June there was a green spike on the cut stump, and he stood over it with his flask and said that was the bit he had been waiting for.
