Three arrows in a row
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows three solid black arrows arranged in a vertical row, with the outer two pointing upwards and the centre one pointing downwards. Each arrow has a simple, bold silhouette with a triangular head, a long straight shaft and layered fletching at the tail. The design is rendered in flat black fill with no shading or texture, set against a plain white background.

You count the arrows twice because the damp has swollen the shafts and the fletching sticks to your glove. Three left in the quiver that still fly true, and the rest of the bundle has gone to kindling for a hall fire that no longer has a hall around it. The castle has been a ruin since your grandfather's time, but nobody told the watch on the broken north wall to stop, so you climb up each dusk with a lantern and the old code in your head.

Two arrows pointing at the sky mean the lower pasture is clear and the flock is in. One pointing at the ground means riders in the valley, so bar the gate. Your sister taught you the code the winter she married a miller and left you the wall. She said the signals were older than any lord who had owned these stones, and that a shot loosed from a height always carries farther than the archer expects.
Tonight the mist sits in the valley like spilled milk. You loose the first arrow up into the dark, then the second, and wait for the bell on the far ridge to answer. It does not. Instead a lantern rises from the ford, slow and steady, and you understand it is the miller coming home early with the cart. You nock the third arrow and, for once, do not aim it at the ground. You send it up after the others, a signal with no code in it at all, only the plain wish that someone on the road is looking up.
