Snowflake and script lettering on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black snowflake with six-fold symmetry sits beside a word in cursive script on the inner forearm, running down toward the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photo is taken at a slight angle against a blue fabric background and a lace-textured top.

Dear Tomasz,

The first frost came up the inside of the shop window before I had the ovens lit, ferns first and then, further in, little six-armed stars, each one different, as if somebody had been practising. I scraped a clear patch with my thumb and watched the empty early bus go past with its lights on, and I thought of you counting bus times in that city you swore you would never come back from.
I have kept your side of the bench as it was. The flour scoop still hangs on its nail, the brass one with the dent you put in it the week you turned sixteen. Yesterday I tried the sourdough you always said needed more time, and I gave it more time. It rose slowly in the cold and I kept checking it, the way I kept checking the post.
This morning the dough had doubled, and then, just past four, it began to sigh back down under my palm. I could have knocked it back and started again. Instead I shaped it, scored a cross across the top the way Dad showed us, and slid it onto the stone without waiting for a letter that was never going to come.
It came out dark and blistered and far too good to waste. I have wrapped the first loaf in paper for the postman, who says he will take it to the station on his way. Come home and eat it, or don't. The bread is finished either way.
Love, Ilse
