Small lotus flower on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower is drawn in a single black outline, with pointed petals fanning upward from a narrow base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on the inner wrist with the fingers visible at the top edge of the frame. The photograph is black and white, with a plain, softly blurred background.

Dessie unlocked the side gate of the Nine Elms wholesale hall at half three, torch clamped in his teeth, and said nothing about the mud on my boots. Nobody talks much at that hour. The strip lights hum over the steel benches, and the air smells of wet cellophane and cut stems.

He wanted a water lily for his mother, who had died in February, and he had sketched it on the back of a delivery note: five pointed petals fanning up from a narrow base, nothing else. I told him shading would only make it look like it was trying to be real. Keep one line moving, I said, and let it turn back on itself where the petals meet. He didn't ask why. He watched the pen the way you'd watch a kettle coming to the boil.
It took eleven minutes. The line never lifted once. When I turned the sheet round, the flower sat on the paper with its petals open toward the light, as if it had found its own way up out of the mud of the page. Dessie folded the sheet twice and slid it into his shirt pocket, over the heart, and didn't say thank you, which was right.
At six the lorries started reversing into the bays with their alarms going. I stayed on the stool with the pen capped and the ink still warm between my fingers. Beyond the loading doors the river had turned the colour of pewter, and somewhere across the yard a radio was playing a song about rain that nobody was listening to.
