Before the bells of St Brannoc's had found their voices, Hild Marrow lit the ovens in the bakehouse at the bottom of Tanner's Row, and the moon was still hanging over the mill pond like a coin nobody wanted to spend. She had been baking for forty years, and her hands knew the dough better than her head did.

The trouble began the winter the moon grew thin. Each night it lost a slice, and each morning the village woke to less light on the cobbles. The priest said it was God's business. The miller said it was the frost. Hild said nothing, but she took the last of the rye flour and the good honey, and before the first cock crowed she rolled out a sheet of dough, cut it into a curve, and rolled each end tight toward the middle, the way her mother had shown her for the saints' days.
She set the crescents on the sill of the bakehouse window, where the cold would harden them. At first light she carried one up the hill to the wall where the moon still hung, and she held it up with both hands. The moon took a bite from the bread the way a child takes a biscuit off a plate, and that night it grew a little fuller. Hild made one for every dawn after that, and nobody in Tanner's Row went hungry in the dark months again.
When the moon is full, she still leaves one on the sill. The bakers of Tanner's Row cut the curve with a bit of dough left over from the morning, so the notch is never quite the same twice, and the moon has never once asked for a second loaf.
