Swirls and a semicolon on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small black tattoo on the inner wrist, made of curling scroll lines that rise and sweep together, with a semicolon sitting to the left of the swirls. The linework is smooth and even with solid black ink and no shading. The ink is the only colour in a tightly framed shot on pale skin with a blurred light background.

Ruth had the handover book open before I'd got my coat off, tapping a biro against a line that stopped halfway. Bed nine, Mr Ashdown, no further treatment, daughter due in at six. Beside it she had drawn a small dot with a curled tail underneath, the mark we both used when we weren't ready to finish a thought. She said it was a semicolon, and that the sentence wasn't over, only resting. I told her the night staff would take that as a fancy way of saying nobody knew.

The corridor lights dimmed to their low setting around two, and the monitors kept their own time in soft green. I sat with Mr Ashdown while he slept, watching the drip line loop and sweep across the blanket like a loose ribbon. His daughter had left a cardigan folded on the chair, and I found myself tracing the stitched scrolls at its cuff while the clock above the door ticked past three.

At half past four she came back early, car keys still in her hand, and asked me what the mark in the book meant. I told her what Ruth had told me. She sat down slowly, pressed her palm flat against the bed rail, and said her father had always ended his letters that way, a comma with a flourish, never a full stop. She didn't cry. She just nodded, as if confirming something she'd suspected for years.

When the early shift arrived I wrote the handover myself, and at the bottom of bed nine I drew the mark. The curl went off the edge of the page, and I let it.
