The pond is still there, past the last stile where the beeches give way to alder. You won't find it on any map the carter sells. Wade in at midsummer and you'll see the lotus standing up out of the black water, its petals stacked like the tiers of a bell tower, all points and no softness.

Osric Pell was a miller's boy with a sharp knife and a sharper mother. She wanted that bloom for the church altar, so one wet morning he went out with his bread in his coat and a cloth to wrap the flower in. He reached for it, and the stem did what stems do when they are frightened. It curled tight at the root, round and round, like a rope pulled into a knot by a careful hand. He pulled. The curl held. The water went still around his wrists, and the petals folded inward until the centre drew closed like a fist.
He came home with an empty cloth and wet boots and told his mother the pond had dried up. She knew better. Every spring after, she walked out to the first stile and laid a flat grey stone on the step, and she never once said what it was for.
If you go out there yourselves, leave a stone of your own. The pond will not mind you looking, but it does not forgive a hand that comes to take.
