The cutting arrived in a biscuit tin, wrapped in a damp tea towel that had gone the colour of weak tea by the time the postman reached our step. Mum wouldn't let me open it there. Anything that had come all the way from Tenerife deserved a proper table, she said, and she carried it through the hall as if it might spill.

Grandad's letter was folded under the lid, in biro, the letters leaning as if they were walking uphill. Stick it in grit, not compost. Keep it dry until the nodes swell. It will sulk. Let it sulk. He had been rooting these on the balcony of a flat in Puerto de la Cruz for thirty years, and he had never once let anyone else hold the tin.

It sulked. For five weeks the grey stub on the windowsill did nothing but wrinkle, and Mum began saying things about the post office and the state of the world. I checked it every morning before school, pressing the skin with my thumb for any give. Then one Tuesday in February a fat green knob split open, and by the weekend there were leaves like a pair of spread hands, glossy and pointed, with a tight bud the size of a fingernail.

The first flower opened the night Grandad rang. Its five petals unfurled like the blades of a small white windmill, gold at the throat, and the kitchen filled with a sweetness that made Mum stop mid-sentence. I held the phone to the glass. He went quiet for a while, then said, Told you. It only sulks until it's ready.
