Stylised lily and leaf flash design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black silhouette drawing of stylised lily-like flowers and long tapering leaves arranged in a loose bouquet. The shapes are solid black fills separated by thin white cut-out lines, giving a graphic, flat look. The image is black and white only, centred on a plain white background with no skin visible.

You have been cutting the same lily for eleven years, since Mairi Gillies left the card-cutting bench for the mainland and handed you her knife with its wooden grip gone grey. Every spring the ferry company wants the sailing-season covers redrawn, and every spring you sit at the window above Dorran harbour with a sheet of black card, a steel rule and the arum lilies nodding in the ditch outside, trying to find where the flower stops and the leaf begins.

The trick, Mairi told you, is that the white lines do the work. You don't draw a lily; you draw the thin gaps between the petal and the stem, and the eye fills in the rest. So you cut the long tapering leaves first, slow and even, then the spathes, the cupped trumpets that curl back like the hand of someone about to speak. The knife sticks on the third bloom. You lift it, blow the crumbs off, and the card holds its breath.
Ferguson the postmaster comes in on Thursday with a pot of tea and a complaint that the lilies look like gulls. You tell him gulls are what the island sells, and he laughs, which is as close as he gets to approval. He pins the cover flat under a jar of sea glass and says the bouquet looks like it's leaning into a wind nobody else can feel.
That night you cut one last leaf for yourself, a single sliver with no flower to hang from, and leave it on the sill. By morning the tide has come up the ditch and the lilies have bowed, but the leaf is still standing, black against the glass, pointing out to the boat that will come in with the mail.
