Lotus flower with Om symbol design
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink design of a stylised lotus flower with pointed, outlined petals. A tapering, swirling stem rises from the centre of the flower, and a solid Om symbol sits beneath it. The linework is bold and uniform on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

You are still kneeling on the wet planks of the jetty when the first ferry of the monsoon noses into the reeds, its engine coughing, and Amma Lathi does not look up from her pond. She has lifted one lotus from the black water and set it on a tin plate beside a stick of incense. The smoke climbs straight for a little way, then loses its nerve and begins to coil.

Everything worth growing on this island, she says, comes up out of mud that the rest of us step around. You have a ticket folded twice in your shirt pocket for the noon crossing to the mainland, the one you have been counting down to since the rains began, and you feel its edges through the cotton as she speaks. You tell her the mud is only mud. She laughs and says that is why you are the one leaving.
She hums while she works, one long rounded note from the bottom of the throat, the same sound the ferry drivers make when the engine finally catches. With her heel she draws a curled mark in the wet sand, a shape like a seed with a tail, and tells you to hold your breath until the note runs out. You do, and the rain stops for the length of it, and in that silence the lotus opens one petal at a time, pale as a struck match.
The noon ferry sounds its horn across the lagoon. You do not stand. When you finally look down, the ticket has gone soft in your fingers, and the incense smoke above the pond is still turning in its slow spiral, rising past the reeds towards a sky that has not yet decided to clear.
