Space scene across a back

Back · Colour · Photo

A large back piece shows a blue police box, several planets with ringed and banded surfaces, a starship resembling the Enterprise, a Death Star, a small fighter craft and an orange-trailed rocket, linked by a vertical line of dots. The planets and ship use shaded and blended colour in blue, green and grey, with black outlines and some stippled stars. Colour ink dominates the composition, and a yellow circular emblem sits at the top near the neck.

Dear Marcus, I found the shoebox under my mother's stairs on Tuesday, the one with the cardboard orrery we made in Mr Tolley's Year Nine. Forty-odd cotton-wool planets, one still wearing the blue felt I glued on for the rings, and the rocket hung on a bent coat hanger that you swore would reach the ceiling. It didn't. It stopped at the light fitting, which we agreed was close enough to orbit.

I'm writing because the reunion is Saturday and I keep deciding not to go. Everyone will ask about the tall blue box you wanted to sneak into the Christmas concert, and whether I still have the grey station that Gareth nicked off the bus. I don't have answers. What I have is the drawing you did on the back of the dinner register, a box with a dotted line running up past the planets the way you explained gravity, with the rest of us spinning off the ends like loose thread.

So here is what I'll do. I'll bring the shoebox. I'll set it on the table by the buffet, and when someone asks what it's for I'll say it's a time machine that only works if you stand in the right room at the right moment. Then I'll look for you. If you're not there, I'll go and stand under the big clock in the hall where we used to wait for the late bus, counting minutes until somebody's dad pulled up, and see what we're still orbiting.

Yours, Pell
