Star constellation on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a small constellation-style tattoo of dots and asterisk-shaped stars running diagonally across the upper back, near the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and the marks are solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the frame is tightly cropped, with a person's hair and a red and blue checked shirt visible at the edge.

The roof had gone the winter our grandfather died, so from the great hall at Harrowgate you could lie on the flags and look straight up through the rafters at the sky. Mam said it was the only view the family had left to sell. I was eleven and furious about being sent to the ruin for the afternoon, so I dragged a stool under the open timbers, took the back of an old gas bill and started counting.

Dad had a chart from the lighthouse keeper at Whitby, a sheet gone soft as a dishcloth from years of folding. He said the pattern had a name I have forgotten, some hunter with a belt, but I didn't believe grown men about anything in the sky. Instead I pricked the dots as they showed, small and cold, and drew a little asterisk at each one that flared brighter than the rest. Tom held the torch and insisted the scatter was a bear. I told him the stars had rules about bears.
We stayed until the cold got into our teeth. When we came down, Dad was at the gate with his coat open, peering up as though he'd lost something. He took the bill from my hand, studied my marks for a long time, and said nothing about hunters or bears. He only walked us home along the lane with the torch pointing at our feet.
Next morning he was back at the ruin with a tin of white paint, marking the same dots across the stone above the gate, each star in the place I had drawn it, so that anyone coming up the moor road in the dark could tilt their head and find the way home. The paint was dry by dinner time. Tom still swears it was a bear.
