Up on Mossbrae the castle had lost its roof to a hundred winters, but its lord still kept the north tower warm. He was a broad, scaled man with a shell on his back like a cartwheel and spikes along his collar like a hedge in March. Each harvest his masked servants came down the valley road and took a sheaf from every door. The villagers had stopped arguing. They left their barley at the crossroads and went to bed before dark.

Tam Greenhollow was the youngest of seven and the only one who would not leave his bread out. He took his grandfather's iron blade, its grip wound in green wool, and walked up the hill with a trail of mushroom-capped children behind him, because they had been told he was simple and wanted to see it. At the gate the masked servants stood aside. They had no love for the lord, but they had wives and debts, and they looked at the sword and then at their boots.
Inside, the lord laughed and spat fire at the rafters until the old tapestries curled. Tam could not get close to him, for the shell turned every blow. So he went instead to the broken bell tower, where his cousin Mabel, who wore a red cap and knew every drain in Mossbrae, had already greased the pulley. Tam hauled the rope. The great bell, cast from the church silver the lord had stolen years before, swung out over the courtyard and rang once, then again, and the sound ran down into the shell like a crack through ice.
The shell split along its seam. The lord shrank to a grumbling old man in a wet coat, and his servants, hearing the bell, dropped their sheaves on the stones and walked home to their own doors. In the morning the barley lay scattered across the courtyard, and the valley ate bread that winter.
