Stag head within geometric triangles
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A stag or deer head faces forward, with long, branching antlers rising above the ears. Fine pen hatching and stippling model the fur, eyes and muzzle, while the antlers are drawn in open outline. Behind the head sit large outlined and hatched triangles, a small filled diamond and a chevron above, all in black ink on a white background.

The third peg would not sit true, and Ilse Varrow knelt in the wet bracken to find out why. Her master had left her a brass theodolite with one cracked lens and a charter of Oster Vale written in a hand so cramped it looked like hatching. The charter said the crown's boundary ran from the chapel bell to the stone ear of the hill stag, then down the long slope to the river, and that every mark on the land must answer to those two points.

She sighted through the theodolite. The stag stood where the charter said, a stone head on the ridge with antlers that split and split again until they lost themselves in the sky. Each time she set the instrument, the line from the bell swung a little further west, as though the stag were turning its head to watch her measure. By dusk she had three triangles on her paper and not one of them closed.
Her master's ledgers were in the chest under the window. She found the old survey of the Vale, drawn fifty years before, and laid it over her own. The triangles matched exactly. Every one had been drawn around the stag, not around the crown, and in the corner someone had inked a small black diamond where the breath of the animal would fog a cold morning. The king had never owned the hill. He had only been measuring from it.
In the morning she moved the third peg a hand's breadth east, to where a man would have stood to take the reading. Then she pulled it up again and left the ground bare. She drew the boundary once more, hatching the slope fine and dark, and signed the survey beneath the stag's head as the old surveyors had. The chapel bell rang seven. Nobody came to check her work.
