Sphynx cat with third eye and sun

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing drawing of a hairless sphynx cat head with a third eye on its forehead, large ears and a dotted sun with radiating lines behind it. The face and ears are built up with stippled dots, while the outline and sun rays use crisp black linework. The design is drawn in black ink only on cream paper, with a black fineliner pen lying across the top right.

The sphynx had been watching the lighthouse keeper's daughter since the storm took the roof off the chapel, and she had decided, somewhere between the third bowl of milk and the fourth, that the animal was not an ordinary cat. Ordinary cats did not sit on the rail facing the sea with their eyes shut. Ordinary cats did not flinch when the bell rang thirteen times instead of twelve.

Her grandmother said it was the sun that had made the cat strange. Every hundred years, the old woman claimed, the sun leaned so close to the earth that it left a mark on whatever was looking at it, and the mark opened a second kind of sight in the forehead. Ada had laughed at that until the morning she came down the stairs and found the cat waiting at the bottom, its skin warm as bread, the small dark eye above its nose open and fixed on the window where the first light was coming up pale and raw over the water.

They walked to the headland together without speaking. The rays of the sun were already spilling over the cliff edge, long thin lines like the bristles of a brush, and in the middle of them the sun itself sat low and round, a stone with its face turned their way. The cat lifted its head. The third eye opened wider, and for a moment Ada saw what it saw: every boat that had ever gone out and not come back, drifting in a row beneath the water, all of them lit gold.

She went home and told her grandmother nothing. The sun rose clean the next morning, and the cat slept by the stove with its ears folded flat, and when Ada finally sat down to eat her porridge she found she could not stop looking at the small bright spot she had started seeing, very faintly, in the middle of her own forehead.
