Spider with dotted web on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black spider with thin legs and a purple gem-like abdomen sits at the centre of the image, surrounded by dotted lines suggesting a web. Bold black outlines and solid black fills define the spider, while the abdomen and a faint pink shading add colour. Part of a green and red leaf or flower tattoo is visible at the left edge, and the skin is shown in close framing on a lower leg.

Aunt Phyllis kept the brooch pinned inside her glove all through the vows, and I only noticed because she kept tapping it through the satin, the way you'd check a pocket for keys. It was a spider, black enamel with legs as thin as hatpins, a purple stone set in its belly and a ring of seed pearls around that. She swore it had been fished out of a wedding cake in 1958. Nobody believed her.

The reception was in the village hall, where someone had strung fairy lights across the rafters in loops that looked like dew on a morning web. My job was the cake table. I had just cut the first slice when Phyllis came up beside me, smelling of Parma Violets and rain, and pressed the brooch into my palm. "Borrowed," she said. "Not stolen. Keep hold of it until somebody needs a bit of luck."
I didn't understand until the best man read out a message from the bride's late grandmother. It said, in the florid way of old women, that a marriage was a web: you spun it yourself, and the whole family felt every tug. The room laughed, then went quiet, and Phyllis gave me a look that said I should have trusted her sooner.
When the first dance began, the bride's veil snagged on a bentwood chair and tore a little at the crown. Phyllis was there before anyone else, quick as a magpie, taking the brooch from my hand and fixing it into the net so the tulle held. The spider sat on the bride's shoulder all evening, its purple belly catching the bulbs, and nobody once asked where the web had gone.
