You are the one sent out to fetch the second crate of bottled ale from the back of the Plough's van, and you are already late when the first spots of rain come in off the Blackwater. The barn doors are propped open for air. Somebody's aunt has pinned a handwritten sign to the gatepost saying the ceremony moves inside if it rains, and it is raining, so the whole congregation of thirty-odd people shuffles past you with paper plates and sodden hats.

Inside, the light has gone the colour of weak tea. Above the doorway, between the beam and an old cart hook, a spider has strung her web overnight, a wheel of silver threads so fresh that the drops hang on it like beads. Your cousin Dez says it is bad luck to knock it down and worse luck to leave it, so the two of you stand there arguing under your breath while the vicar taps the microphone and the first hymn starts up thin and wobbly.

Then the clouds tear open over the yard. The sun slants through the doorway and lands full on the web, and every thread lights up at once. When the best man flings the confetti, the paper scraps catch in the rings of silk and stay there, turning slowly, pinned like a field of small stars. Nobody sees it except you, and you do not point. You just stand with the crate against your hip, holding your breath, watching the bride step under it while the whole barn goes gold.
