On the last morning he handed her a reel tagged in old black letters: Strength. The yard had made it the year his father went down off Sheerness, and nobody had cut a fathom from it since. Teal dye ran through the outer strands so the cable showed a dark ribbon when wet, and the core was laid from seven tarred bundles the men called vertebrae, because each one locked into the next and bent only one way. 'It doesn't stretch,' he said. 'It gives, and then it comes back. That's the whole trick.'

She laid the last length through the afternoon, counting turns under her breath while the light went orange across the sheds. When she finally cut it, the cable curled over the bench in a loose, deliberate hook, the way a sleeping dog lies, and Mr Okafor ran his thumb down the tarred seams without speaking.

He tied the end to the mooring bollard with a bowline she had never seen him use, then pressed the reel tag into her palm. Beneath the word someone had stamped a date, and beneath that a blank strip of tin waiting for a name. 'Yours now,' he said. 'Put your name on the next one.'
