Green vine scroll tattoo on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a single tattoo on the upper back, showing a symmetrical, looping vine with curled tendrils and small pointed leaves. The linework is dark and bold, and the shapes are filled with a flat, muted green. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame, with the shoulder and arm visible at the left edge and a green top at the bottom.

The old woman had kept the vine off the Scarrow reservoir wall for forty winters, and every spring it came back through the cracks in the concrete as if it had been waiting for her to turn her back. Hanne Varro never cut it all the way down. She trimmed the brown tips and let the rest grow where it liked, which was over the broken pump housing and up the rusted mast where the sensor birds used to perch before the glass rains took them.

When the water engineers came up from Lowmere with their cutters and their clipboards, they sent the warden's daughter, Ide, to clear the wall. She was sixteen and had a good knife. Under the leaves she found a split in the main pipe, and the vine had wound around it in loops, each curl closing on the next, the same shape Ide had seen cut into the iron gate every morning of her life. She lifted the blade and stopped.
Hanne came down the path with a basket of bread and asked what she was waiting for. Ide said the engineers wanted it gone. Hanne said her own grandmother had told her the vine turned back on itself because it was holding something together, the way a splint holds a bone. Ide asked what it was holding. The old woman shrugged. "Whatever it was given," she said, and went back up the hill.
Ide cut only the dead tendrils that morning and left every loop standing. When the engineers returned at dusk the crack was sealed with green, the pipe was running clear, and a single tendril had curled round the brass tap and turned it a quarter, so that a thin bright line of water fell into the dust below, as if the vine had decided someone was thirsty.
