Infinity symbol with strength script

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink infinity symbol loops into the cursive word strength, running horizontally across the lower back above the waistband of blue jeans. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with the infinity loop drawn as a double-lined ribbon that has some soft shading along one side. The image is in black and grey on warm skin, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's wife had spun bog-cotton thread for three winters before she tied her first knot, and the women on the Sound road said it would never part. Her name was Mairi Gillies. Her cottage stood at the end of the road where peat smoke lay flat over the water and the gulls sat on the slip like grey washing.

When her husband went out in the autumn gale and did not come back to the slip, she did not go down to the shore. She sat at the loom. She wove a band of grey thread a finger wide, and into it, in dark wool and in her own careful hand, she worked the word strength. When the band was as long as her arm she turned it over, crossed it once, and joined the ends. The loop lay on the table like a figure eight asleep. She sat with it all night, and by morning the kettle had boiled dry and she had not noticed.

In spring she walked the band to the far point and gave it to the minister's boy, who was bent under his grandfather's creel of lobsters. Pull on it, she told him. Pull at either end. The boy did, and the thread gave a little and then no more. He laughed at her and carried it home anyway.

Years later, when he was old and the Sound had taken his own boats, he sat with the band on his knee and worked the loop open with a bodkin to see where it began. He found no beginning and no end, only the same grey thread running round the word and back again. He sat a long while with it in his lap before he tied it closed.
