Spiral galaxy tattoo on shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A spiral galaxy is tattooed over the top of a shoulder, with its arms curling outwards from a bright central core. The galaxy is built from fine stippled dots that vary in density to create depth, and small white dots scattered across the dark arms suggest stars. Pinkish skin shows through in the core and along the outer edge, and the dark background behind the shoulder keeps the composition focused on the design.

The ledger at the crossing had three hundred and twelve lines of names, and my job that winter was to put a dot beside each one when a lorry cleared the barrier at Tarn Ford. Nobody asked me to count anything else. I did it anyway, in the margins, with a fountain pen I was not supposed to own.

The night the snow came in sideways, a van with no plates sat at the barrier for forty minutes while its driver held a child's drawing against the glass. It was a spiral in black pencil, pressed so hard the paper shone, with a pale hole at its centre. Beneath it, in careful capitals, someone had written ARM and nothing more. Mr Gilchrist, my supervisor, wanted the van turned back. I asked to see the drawing again.
I had a stipple kit in my drawer, a leftover from a cartography course I never finished. While the engine idled, I copied the spiral onto the back of a customs form, one dot at a time, letting the arms thicken where the pencil had bitten deepest and leaving a few specks bare for the stars. It took most of an hour. The driver watched through the window and did not blink once.
We stamped the papers at dawn and let them through. Gilchrist never asked about the form. Months later a postcard arrived with no return address, a galaxy on the front dotted exactly the way I had done it, and on the back a single line: the middle is the hardest part. I pinned it inside the ledger, between the last page of names and the blank ones that were never going to be filled.
