Pass me that colander, boy, and stop gawping at the stove. The water's only thinking about boiling, and it won't do it any faster for you staring. Now. You want to know why I keep that whelk on the sill when every other cook on the Marigold keeps a bottle of rum there. It's because a whelk's shell only turns the one way, like a clock, and a man at sea can lose his sense of up and down long before he loses his stomach.

My Tom gave it me in Grimsby, the spring the herring went soft. He'd walked the quay twice for a penny's worth of rope and came back with that shell in his fist and a grin like a split loaf. Said it was the only honest thing in the market, never once pretending to be anything but a house on a corkscrew. The scallop I got myself, off a fishwife at Whitby who swore it had been all the way to Compostela and back. I believed her. Scallops always look as though they've been somewhere.

The autumn the Marigold lost her mainsail, I was alone in the galley with the stew going while the lads were roped to the rail. A wave came green over the hatch, the lamp went out, and the pot near tipped into my lap. I found the whelk in the dark by feel, held it to my ear the way Tom taught me, and listened for the turn of the sea. Then I counted the spiral with my thumb, once, twice, and knew which way was the bow. I shouted it down the companionway, and every man made it home. The stew was salted a touch heavy, mind, but nobody complained.
