Hold the lamp steady, girl, the tide is still turning and the crab won't wait for either of us. You want to know why the old keeper called the reef Pincer Ledge? Now, the sea gave her a gift every spring, a curl of foam that spun on the surface like a thought you can't finish. She caught it on her claws and wound it round and round until it held its shape, and when she let it go it kept on turning, two spirals, one for the flood and one for the ebb. Sailors saw them from the deck and swore the water was trying to tell them something.
The keeper's son, Tamsin Reeve, was nine and had no patience for stories that didn't end in a wreck or a wedding. So he went down the steps at low water with a hook and a tin of bait, meaning to catch the crab for his supper. He found her sitting on the last dry step, watching the lamp swing across the sea, and she held up one claw and waited.
He sat down beside her. They watched the light go round until the tide came in and covered the steps, and when the boy climbed back up he had nothing in his tin but a single curl of foam that never quite melted. He kept it in his pocket for the rest of his long life, and on wet evenings he would take it out and turn it over, the way you'd turn a key you had forgotten the lock for.
