Spitfire fighter planes on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large Spitfire fighter plane is shown in flight, with two smaller Spitfires flying nearby. The linework and shading are highly detailed, with soft grey gradients on the fuselage, wings and spinning propeller that give a sense of depth and motion. The design is in black ink and greys on pale skin, with the main aircraft angled diagonally across the inner upper arm against a plain grey background.

'Forty pence to you, love,' she said. 'Box has the decals, mostly. Some of the codes have gone yellow.' He read the letters on the tail aloud, slowly, the way people read a headstone. 'My dad flew one of these out of Hornchurch. Never talked about it. Built one in the kitchen every winter, though, with the window open for the glue fumes, and Mum never once complained.'

She fished out a sheet with the roundels, pale and dry, and held it up under the light from the car park. 'These were never used. He was going to finish one and didn't get round to it.'
The man paid his forty pence in coins still warm from his pocket. Later, when the rain turned to a fine hiss on the tarpaulins, Ada set the kit back on the shelf and angled the propeller towards the grey light, and for a moment it looked like something still turning.
