Biomechanical gears on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows metal gears, cogs and mechanical components revealed through torn skin that wraps around the calf. The rendering is highly detailed, with smooth grey and black shading that gives the metal a glossy, three-dimensional look. Reddish strands of tissue along the tears add colour, and three side-by-side panels show the same leg from different angles.

Dear Tom,

The Palais's big organ has finally given up, so Mr Vickery has had the gears pulled out and laid on the sprung boards like a row of silver teeth. I've been sweeping up brass filings all afternoon. He says the old drive wheel was cut by a man in Coventry who never once watched a dance, which is why the waltzes always ran fast on the third turn. Nobody noticed except me, because I counted the beats while I polished the rail.
Last Saturday, before the doors opened, I found a loose cog wedged under the stage lip. It was warm. I'd swear it was warm. I put it in my apron pocket meaning to give it back, and it has been knocking against my hip all week, one tooth at a time, like someone asking to be let out.
Tonight the band plays the final set and Mr Vickery wants the floor cleared by nine so the fitters can run a new belt. He asked me to lock up. I won't. I am going to set the cog on the bandstand where the old wheel turned, then dance the last waltz on my own, counting the beats the way the machine did, so that whatever sleeps inside it can hear the tune go round.
Don't write back about the ledger. Write about the sea.
Yours, Edie
