Helicopters and rappelling figures on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm. A large helicopter dominates the upper section, with a smaller helicopter behind it and a rising haze, while a shaded face and pointing hand sit on the left. Dark silhouetted figures descend on ropes beneath the helicopter, lit by a bright beam of light across the arm.

The hand came up through the smoke before anyone saw the face behind it. Sergeant Maud Pilling held it flat, fingers together, the way she had taught the new lads at Tarn Moss: stop, wait, look at me. Below her the gorse was going up in a long orange tongue, and somewhere in the cloud the old machine was holding its nose into the wind like a dog that had caught a scent.

Corporal Eddie Vance went first, then the medic, then the stretcher man, each dropped out of the open door on a rope that swung like a plumb line. Lightning had split the ridge twice, and in each white flash the figures stood out black against the ground, pinned to the light for a heartbeat before the dark took them back. Maud counted them down. Four. Five. Six. The rope hummed in the downdraught and the rotor wash flattened the bracken into silver.
The seventh rope did not come down. The pilot called it in a flat voice: cable snagged on a fence post, and he could not hold the hover much longer. Maud had to choose between waiting and going in on a hand signal alone. She raised her palm again and kept it still for the length of one breath, and the figure at the foot of the beam unclipped, turned away from the burning hillside, and began to climb toward her hand.
By the time the rain came in off the Scar, the valley was black and quiet and all six of them were walking the track out, lit from behind by the last of the storm. Maud kept her hand up until the helicopter had turned for home, out of habit, though there was nobody left to signal.
