Square and compasses with G on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a Masonic square and compasses with a letter G in the centre, set against a flat blue panel. The compasses and square are outlined in dark ink, with gold-toned shading and a textured pattern on the compass arms. The design sits on a forearm and fills most of the frame, with a dark background behind the arm.

The coach had been held forty minutes, and the man at the front of the queue kept checking his watch as if the Antwerp lodge would start without him. Ruth Calloway lifted the lid of the wooden case on the inspection bench and found a folded apron, a gavel with a split handle, and a pair of brass compasses lying in a bed of blue baize. The square hung on a loop of ribbon beside them, its inner edge worn bright by somebody's thumb.

Her father had been a Mason in Ipswich. He had kept a pair of compasses in his waistcoat pocket for thirty years and never once let her touch them. She had found them after the funeral, in the pocket of a suit that still smelled of his pipe, and she had not known what to do with them, so she had put them in a drawer.
She closed the case and signed the form. 'Go on through,' she said. At the barrier Tomas lifted the box onto his shoulder, and she saw the square swing on its ribbon and catch the strip light. She stood in the lane long after the coach pulled away, and found she had been holding her own palm open, the way a person holds something they are not allowed to keep.
