Geometric mountain peaks on an upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large triangular mountain peaks in solid dark blue and near-black fill, with a smaller, softer grey peak shaded above them. The edges are crisp and the shapes are flat with minimal shading, giving a simple, graphic look. It sits on the inner upper arm against a blurred red background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

The third triangle never closed. Ottilie Brack had walked the ridge for nine days with a theodolite wrapped in straw, and every night she pinned her sightings to the table at the Carnmore lodge and tried to make the three peaks agree. Two of them agreed. The third, the one the shepherds called the Grey Wife, would not sit still on the paper.

On the tenth morning the cloud came down off the north face like a dropped sheet, and she sat on a boulder with her boots full of meltwater and waited. Her assistant, Eamon Rae, a boy who could not yet read a vernier, held the staff and hummed under his breath. When the cloud thinned, there was the Grey Wife, fainter than the others, a ghost half hidden behind its neighbour. She understood then that the error had never been in her instrument. The old sheet had set the peak in front of the others, when it stood behind them.
That night she drew it in blue ink, the two near peaks dark and square, the far one washed pale with the side of a brush so it seemed to recede. Then she sat a long time looking at the page, because a surveyor is taught to show only what is measured, and she had measured the Grey Wife only by how it was hidden.
In the morning the lodge keeper asked her to sign the register. She wrote her name, then the height, then, after a moment's thought, a small shaded triangle beside them, the way a child would draw a hill.
